Building a life of purpose
You know you’re multi passionate when you stop trying to pick one thing and build a life that holds all of it. That’s from Marie Forleo — she is an American entrepreneur, a New York Times number one best-selling author most known for building a digital personal development empire.
You can hear me share more on this or keep reading below:
I think this is one of the greatest myths of purpose. That it is one thing. That’s a lot of pressure. And a lot of restriction. Then some people might spend their whole life looking for that one thing not realizing the many things that make them whole. And they might find that it’s been there all along when you make the space for it.
I actually had a boss that made me feel bad about being multi passionate (busy is how she saw it) I think some people still make me feel bad about it!
Several years ago I came across a book in an airport and I read it and its entirety on the way to a conference in San Diego.
It was called crafting your purpose by John Coleman.
There is so much that I can share from his work but I’ll start with something very timely today and that is the labors framework.
We all work – but that’s only a piece of it. If it’s the whole thing you’re missing so much opportunity to live into your purpose.
I have found this to be super impactful as I work with people to find more fulfillment not just in work, but in life.
This framework is helpful for people of all ages from teens trying to discover their next step and even retirees as they transition to their next chapter.
Let’s go.
L is for Love and that doesn’t just mean romantic love but what types of relationships are you surrounding yourself with. How are you connecting with others.
A for avocation and self-improvement. These are the things that you do outside of your primary occupation, its those small opportunities for craft or other ways that you enrich you life. You should always be working towards something!
B is for beauty. This is either doing something with your hands actually creating something of beauty like art, gardening, or music or putting yourself in environments to experience beauty whether that be nature, an art museum, etc.
O is for occupation. This is where I think sometimes we put too much emphasis. Sometimes your job can be incredibly fulfilling. Other times it might just feel like a paycheck. I do have ways that you can find more meaning in your work but that’s for another day and another conversation!
R is for religion and spirituality. I know what this means for me but this may mean something different for you. Basically it’s recognizing that you are part of something bigger than yourself or a way to help you interpret the world.
S is for service. And if you’re wondering which piece of this is my favorite it’s this one. The happiest people on earth are those who live their lives enmeshed in service. How are you giving back? Not just by volunteering but in how you live every day, how you are showing up for others.
So today and everyday. I hope you labor well. I hope you labor with intention. I hope you find fulfillment in all you do.
And if you don’t, I hope you use some of the ideas in this exercise to find it.
